We had a fun time out sharing on the streets of Durango this morning. We usually do a leaders' prayer time Tuesday mornings but occasionally will go out witnessing (of course, you can pray while you share!!!). That's what we did today. We never seem to have many people join us for the evangelism times. Before today we had never had more than 1 person show up on these morning evangelism times. Today 2 joined me so that was great!!! We've done city-wide evangelism before it just seems it is hard to get leaders to come in the morning. Chelsea and Jachin came and we had a great time witnessing to Rick, Aianna, Bev (pictured above with Chelsea) and the Archuletas. We chose not to use any tools but instead to just meet people, start conversations and then transition through the sound barriers. Each of these people were at dramatically different spots in their spiritual journeys but bottom line was that they all had a hunger for God. One wanted to start fresh with God, one needed encouragement in her faith, the Archuletas were believers but wanted prayer and the 4th is contemplating a relationship with Jesus but not yet ready to take that step. Like always, God is working in peoples' lives and it was great getting to be a part of that! I hope you'll take the initiative to go sharing with some friends in your town soon too!!!

People Like Jesus!
Lat week we got the opportunity to share the "Jesus tract" on campus (check that out here). I wanted to know if our thinking on this was right so I asked a student that came by, "On a scale of 1 to 10, what would you think about the question, 'would you like to hear how the Bible says you can become a Christian?'" He replied, "a 2, not very interested." I then asked, "on a scale of 1 to 10, what do you think about Jesus?" He replied, "a 10, Jesus was awesome!" I then asked, "would you be interested in hearing what Jesus tells you personally?" He said, "absolutely!" This is exactly what I expected. People might not like the church but they don't have those bad views about Jesus. If we want to share Christ with people I think it is vitally important to reach out to them based on their high perspective of Jesus! That's why were developing the "Jesus tract" (get it here).
1 Cor.3:11 - "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ."

Rocking the Slopes!
I spent yesterday riding Purgatory with my friend Craig. We haven't ridden together in 12 years! God is so good to us! He even gave us free tickets (thanks Vickie and Paul) and a great powder day. It was a great day of riding. We decided before we even hit the slopes that we would try to share Christ with every person we rode the lift with (remember the Chair Lift Evangelism post and the snowboarding for Jesus post). Anyway, we definitely shared with every person we rode the lift with. Not one person turned us down. Everyone is hungry for Jesus! Four stories stick out as dramatic examples of where people are at. Here they are:
1. "D" is a Colorado native who loves the outdoors. As we shared with him he was very open. He believed God was little bit of everything - nature, people, etc. As we shared the gospel with him Craig told his story. Craig said, "When you get to the real issues isn't it more about not wanting to give up the steering wheel? That's how it was for me. I had a love affair with the steering wheel of my life and I wasn't gonna let anyone touch that sucker, especially not Jesus." "D" replied, "I think that is probably true for all of us." I was shocked at how honest he was. God please bring David to yourself.
2. "M" came here for college and never wanted to leave (hey, that's what happened to me). She grew up with faith being "pushed down her throat." We used the tactics approach with her and asked her a ton of questions about her current belief that the goal of life is to follow your heart and be happy. We asked her if she would be surprised to find out the Bible was true and God was God. She said, "not at all." Once again, this precious young woman was completely open to talking about Christ.
3. "N" is a middle school student we shared with. God has been working on his heart but he didn't yet have a relationship with Him. We challenged him about the choices and pressures he will soon face and asked him what his foundation is. He said, "none." We got to share the only true hope with him before the lift ended.
4. Chuck jumped on the lift and right off the bat I asked, "what's your name?" He said, "Chuck." Working through the sound barriers I said, "I had a mentor named Chuck." He asked, "That's cool, what did he do." I replied, "he was a pastor." And before I could ask the next transition question (what's been your experience with Christianity?) he boldly replied, "that's great because I'm a Christian too!" We got to encourage him for the rest of the trip.
Those weren't all our conversations but a few that stick out in my mind. It was great to see, once again, that everyone is interested in Jesus and each of these people were at different places in their journeys towards Him. I hope these stories encourage you as you share your faith today! Check out this old snowboarding video from years ago if you want. Have a GREAT day!

Blood Donation Evangelism
I met my friend "S" while giving blood a while back. I knew that instant God had been telling me to share with her. After giving blood we were both in the waiting room along with her partner and a few other people. As I transitioned through the sound barriers and shared the Good News I found that "S," like so many people, was searching for Jesus. After that I have made it a point to try to stop by her work place (a retail store), with Erin (my wife), to keep connecting with her and sharing with her. Yesterday I ran into her at the store. I asked, "What's new in your life?" She replied, "I started going to church." I asked her what led her to do that and she said, "I started reading the Bible and found out Jesus is a really nice guy." I don't think she's trusted him as Savior and Lord yet but she continued, saying, "I want to start doing jail ministry as well." I was shocked. Obviously God has been working in this precious young woman's heart and obviously He has big plans for her. Erin and I were racing to get home but I was floored. We said goodbye and came home to get the girls dinner but I haven't quit thinking about that conversation since. Jesus tells us the parable of the sower in Mt.13:1-23. Praise God for what He is doing long after that seed was sown. He will make it grow (1 Cor. 3:7) and His Word won't return void (Is.55:11). He is faithful! Do not get discouraged when you don't see "results" in evangelism. Do what Bill Bright said, "take the initiative in the power of the Holy Spirit and then trust the results to God." He'll keep working in that person whether you see the fruit or not!

Way to Go Pena!
Alex ROCKS!!! Alex began walking with God back in October and has been growing a ton ever since. Yesterday, as I shared the gospel with a new friend on campus, Alex walked up and spontaneously shared his testimony. Later, when I told everyone Alex got to share his testimony they all replied, "again?" Apparently he had shared his testimony numerous times already this week. That's obviously great but what is even better is what happened last night! Alex brought 2 friends he used to party with (before he knew Christ) to our house for our typical Thursday night dinner and discussion. One of those friends was the first person Alex ever shared his faith with. That young man had some very deep questions during the discussion time. Ron Martin immediately picked up on the situation and went straight over to this new friend and began sharing with him. He ended up putting his trust in Christ for His forgiveness last night!!! Just a note about discipleship here as well, this new believer now represents the 4th concurrent spiritual generation of multiplication on campus at this time. That is the 1st time I've seen 4 generations in the men's side of the ministry (I'm discipling Malcolm who is discipling Alex who just multiplied to the 4th generation). It has happened on the women's side a few times. Way to start your journey of following God Alex! Keep going for Jesus! We love you brother.

I Finally Heard the Gospel!!!
Have you ever been witnessed to? I'm assuming a large percentage of you are already believers because you read this blog about evangelism. You might find that 1st question a bit odd but stick with me for a minute. How often has someone shared the Good News with you? I have always said no one has ever witnessed to me. That was the case until yesterday!!! Yesterday was the 1st time in my life someone took the initiative to share the Gospel with me. I was walking through the Union building and saw some people with the Kiwanis Club giving out info. As I passed by I asked, "how are you all doing?" One of them responded, "better than I deserve." I couldn't believe it. Could he really be applying THAT idea??? You can check out that idea here, we blogged about it a while back. Wondering if he might be trying to witness to me I replied, "why do you say that?" He answered, "because Jesus loves me and my wife more than we could ever deserve." I was so excited I could hardly believe it! Thanks Ryan for taking the initiative to share your faith!!!
While we're thinking about this, ask yourself why it is you don't typically get witnessed to. If it is just averages we're in serious trouble. The stat I hear about evangelism is that only 2% of Christians are intentional about sharing their faith (Christians have to stop believing those 10 bad lies). If so that might be why few people hear the Gospel. I'd prefer to think that the reason I don't get shared with is that people are being led by His Holy Spirit to share with the lost, not other believers. Regardless, more evangelism is definitely needed and I am so excited to have been on the receiving end of intentional evangelism for once! It is exciting to be one of the privileged few who have heard the greatest news and only hope this world has ever known! I pray we'll share that with many more.
Finally, lest we think the Good News isn't being shared anywhere, remember that over 260,000 people hear the gospel and more than 174,000 trust Christ worldwide every single day (34,000 in South America, over 30,000 in China, 25,000 in Africa, 16,000 in Muslim countries and more all around the world)! Praise God for that!!! Please check out this link for tons of creative and easy ways to share your faith so you can get in the game and be a part of the amazing work God is doing worldwide! Have a great day.

Everyone Wants to Know About Jesus!!!
I was meeting with Cameron this morning for our weekly discipleship time when we overheard a couple who were eating and talking about God (I love when you have an opportunity like this in a public place - see more here). Other than Cameron and me, they were pretty much the only people in the cafeteria. We could hear every word they were saying. The man said, "I don't think you can get to heaven if you do that." That got my attention so I told Cameron, "we should listen here for a minute." He continued, "the Bible has lists of things that you can do otherwise you'll go to hell. I'm not sure what they are. I really need to get a Bible and find out for myself." We could stand it no longer. I grabbed a Bible from my pack and slid a paper with the gospel from Jesus' own mouth into it. We walked over, excused ourselves for interrupting, told the couple we had overheard them and gave them a Bible. That opened up into a conversation about the gospel. We were able to briefly summarize the gospel as they finished their meal and then said goodbye. Just a short time later I was meeting with the Guy's Leadership "Action Team." As all 10 of us sat there discussing our personal ministries I shared with the group about "B" and "T" who we had just given a Bible to and shared with. I told them, "everyone is interested in Jesus. Whether we hear those conversations or not, they're searching." Remember last week's post on sad college students! Just a couple minutes later Dakota interrupted the Bible study and said, "the girls at the table behind us are talking about Jesus." We all listened more carefully and sure enough, 3 young ladies and one guy were all talking about God and Christianity! Dakota went over to that table, said hi and invited them all to Connect (our weekly meeting tonight). We know theoretically that the harvest is plentiful (Mt.9:37) and that Jesus is drawing every person to Himself (Jn.12:32-33) but it is always encouraging to be able to see that in such a vivid way. I hope these stories encourage you to share Him with those around you!

New Stories!
Here's a list of recent evangelism stories! Last night was an amazing time. We did our Connect meeting in the middle of campus and were able to loudly proclaim the gospel in the open air in the most central location on campus. One of the new guys told me, "I sure didn't expect this. I thought the Christian group on campus would be here, just a little less obvious. I definitely didn't expect you guys to be taking such a bold stand out in the open like this, the first week of school." Over 70 students showed up for Connect and many more were all over campus within hearing distance of us! Pray for everyone that heard the Good News last night and check out these recent stories. Also, don't forget to check out last month's top 5 posts.

Post Office Evangelism!
This is a great example of transitioning through the 4 sound barriers. The day before yesterday I was busy but had to get a letter in the mail overnighted. I found the longest line I've ever seen at the post office and if it hadn't been so important to send this I would have left. A few moments later the man standing behind me (his name was John) asked me whether I knew if the packing cylinder he was holding was the smallest available. It looked like it. I asked what he was sending and he said, "a painting." I asked what he painted. He told me this painting was of the Zuni Rain Dancers. I asked if that was an aspect of his religious beliefs. He said yes. I told him I thought it was interesting and that as a non-native I hadn't heard much about the rain dancers. He kept explaining. That opened up an opportunity to tell him that I was a non-denominational Christian. I asked what experience he's had with Christianity. He said, "none." I told him our friend Mikquel's favorite lines (she's a Native) - that Jesus was not a white man, that He was a tribal member and that His message was relevant to Natives. I explained the gospel briefly and then asked how his tribe dealt with the sin problem. He told me they have Katchina whippers that whip you for your sins during ceremonies. I asked if that ever removes his sin and he said, "no." I said, "that is how your tribe tries to deal with sin and others might try other ways but none of the things we try ever truly take away our sins." He agreed. I told him only Jesus completely paid for our sins. He then said the most important thing to his tribe is family and I added, "that's the whole point of Jesus' message - He died for our sins so that anyone who asks His forgiveness and asks Him to come into their lives will be included in God's family." Right about that point I got to the front of the line, now thankful it had been so long as it gave us time for a very good conversation. I didn't get to go through barrier #4 but have John's number and plan on getting in touch with him soon. During the whole conversation, the lady behind him (who I recognized from church) had been insinuating with her eyes that she was praying for the conversation. Before I left the store she said, "my husband and I heard you speak on evangelism at church and where so touched. Thank you for this!" (Lee, if your reading this thank you for praying and jumping into the conversation there at the end!) You can listen to that message below. Anyway, it is so obvious that God was working in John's life and it was equally exciting to be able to practically demonstrate what I recently got to speak about at church. Finally, it is always exciting sharing in line because everyone else in line get's to hear the gospel (it's like a 15 for 1 deal!!!). Thank you God for this awesome opportunity (Col.4:5). Please pray John comes to know Jesus! Also, don't miss the last post (below this one) about Erin Mulcares recent trip to Angola!

Plan B

I hope you have been applying the "Casual Friday" idea. I ordered my "save the storks" shirt and have been wearing it. I was hoping it would open up conversations that I could transition to the gospel. Unfortunately, I notice people looking at it but none of them say much. Christian t-shirts can be a powerful tool whether they result in conversations or not (check out the video below - a Christian t-shirt will be viewed on average over 3,000 times before it wears out). I'm not convinced t-shirts are the best conversation starters in day to day life but they are a good tool. I do know for certain, though, that they are awesome conversation starters at work. That is the reason we called it the "Casual Friday" idea. Before going into full time ministry I worked as the Air Quality Specialist for the Southern Ute's (I monitored air pollution). Pretty much every Friday I would wear a Christian t-shirt to work. My favorite was the "Plan B" shirt - with a picture of a circle with Christ on the throne (see the picture). People would always ask, "What is the clock on your shirt all about?" That resulted in numerous conversations about Christ every time I wore the shirt. I would say, "Plan A was the natural direction of my life - living for myself. Plan B, the better plan, is my life with Christ at the center." From there it was super easy to share the gospel. That's just one example and there were so many more! Our Connect shirts on campus always get us into conversations about Christ as well (and we've even had non-Christians ask if they could have them as well). The main idea is to be intentional about sharing your faith daily. This is just one more way you can do that!

Evangelism idea: Ask an officer for a ticket! (This is a great story)
I just put the video below on youtube yesterday (check out our channel here). It is something I had thought about a while back and told Erin I wanted to do. She told me just not to get a ticket intentionally. Anyway, it happened. Coming back from a day of evangelism on our Crush Fear summer project I was getting excited listening to the students in my car and didn't even realize I was speeding until I saw the cop. When she pulled me over she asked if I knew why she pulled me over and I said yes. It was at this point that I was able to be very honest with her about how I try to obey the speed limit but often catch myself speeding. I asked her for a ticket. She definitely gave me one. All that led to her saying, "we don't meet people as honest as you all that often," which opened up into a conversation about the gospel. So, this is an idea you can just hold on to until you next get a ticket. When you do get pulled over, be super honest and bring up the gospel from there. On a side note: in the video I said I hadn't had a ticket in a decade. I did have one ticket in that span but it got dropped - no points, no fine, nothing. I hope you DON'T get a chance to apply this idea anytime soon but I really hope you will apply it when the opportunity comes up. Check out the video!

Evangelism idea: An evangelism tip!
The evangelism idea for today is simple but GREAT! A friend of mine, pastor Terry Willis, says his goal when he and his family eat out is to tip their server so much she'll cry tears of joy!!! That is a great attitude! Unfortunately, Christians are known for being terrible tippers (I have known Christian waitresses who have told me this is known by all in the restaurant industry). Erin and I have always tried to tip our servers more than they would ever expect and we always leave a short message on the tip telling them about Jesus! Every time you eat out you have an opportunity to leave a witness for Christ both through giving generously and by leaving a short message. Here is a copy of a receipt from a meal we had last week. We left Beth a tip and a message. You can read more about this exchange at the end of this post. This story illustrates the effect a little generosity and a short message about Christ can have on someone. Also, if you eat out often at a certain location you will soon develop a very good reputation and a very Godly witness. The idea for today is to leave a generous tip (2 Cor.9:6-15) and then write a simple note about Jesus to your server. It takes very little on your end but will have results you can't imagine! Read what happened here and check out this article for more thoughts on Christians and tipping!

23 evangelism stories from last month!
The picture posted above is a picture of the evangelism team at Nightvision, one of the great times witnessing that we experienced last month (the story about Gabriel, posted below, happened at Nightvision). I posted the 17 evangelism ideas from the 1st month last week (you should check those out here) but forgot to post all the stories we shared last month. I figured it would be a good idea to put those stories up today! I hope you're getting an opportunity to apply the most recent ideas - the "top 10" idea and the "share with hundreds more right now" idea. I will be putting up a new idea today or tomorrow but thought it would encourage you to look back at a few of last month's stories. The one thing you can't miss when you read these stories is that all these people, regardless of their responses, needed Jesus and all of them were interested in Him! The harvest truly is ripe (Mt.9:36-38)! Enjoy these stories and please share your stories from last month by posting them as comments to this post. Thanks!
