Circumcision - September 3rd, 2008

Rom.2:25-29 - “Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised (Remember James 2:10). If those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker. A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise is not from men, but from God.” God is sick of our religiosity (Rev.3:15-16) - playing spiritual games to please Him (Mt.15:8, Mk.7:6). God is after our hearts - single minded and focussed, whole hearted devotion and radical obedience to Him and Him alone. Jer.4:3-4 - “This is what the LORD says to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem: “Break up your unplowed ground and do not sow among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, circumcise your hearts, you men of Judah and people of Jerusalem…” I can either be circumcised physically by living a good “Christian” life with all the right outward signs and symbols (1 Sam.16:7), doing all the right “Christian” things, going to “Christian” places, wearing the trendiest “Christian” paraphernalia and acting like “Christians” act or I can be circumcised inwardly, allowing God to cut off all that does not exist solely for Him. God circumcise my heart! Remove whatever doesn’t give you glory, whatever exists for its own ends. No more playing games; He wants everything.
